Uploading backups using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) involves connecting to a remote server and transferring your backup files to that server. Here are the general steps to upload backups with FTP:
Note: Before you begin, make sure you have the following information:
- FTP server address (hostname or IP address)
- FTP username and password
- Backup files on your local computer that you want to upload
1. Choose an FTP client.
You will need an FTP client software to connect to the remote server. Popular FTP clients include FileZilla, Cyberduck, and WinSCP. Download and install one of these or another FTP client of your choice.
2. Launch the FTP client.
Open your FTP client software.
3. Configure the FTP connection.
a) In your FTP client, find the option to create a new connection or profile. This may be labelled as “Site Manager” or “New Connection”.
b) Enter the following information:
- Hostname or IP address: This is the address of the FTP server where you want to upload your backups.
- Port (usually 21 for FTP): FTP typically uses port 21, but it could be a different port depending on your server configuration.
- Protocol: Choose FTP or FTPS (FTP Secure) if your server requires a secure connection. If your server uses SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), select SFTP.
- Login type: Select “FTP” or “SFTP”, depending on the protocol used by your server.
- Username: Enter your FTP username.
- Password: Enter your FTP password.
c) Save the connection profile for future use if your FTP client allows.
4. Connect to the FTP server.
You can initiate the connection to the FTP server by selecting the “Connect” or “Log In” button and using the provided login credentials.
5. Navigate to the destination folder.
Once connected, you will see the remote server’s file directory on one side of the FTP client interface. Navigate to the folder where you want to upload your backup files.
6. Upload your backup files.
On the other side of the FTP client interface, locate the local directory on your computer where your backup files are stored.
a) Select the backup files you want to upload from your local directory.
b) Drag and drop the selected backup files to the remote directory on the FTP server. Alternatively, you can often right-click on the files and choose an option like “Upload” or “Send” from the context menu.
7. Monitor the upload progress.
Your FTP client will display the progress of the file transfer. The duration of this process varies depending on factors such as the size of your backup files and your internet connection speed.
8. Verify the upload.
After the upload is complete, check the remote directory on the FTP server to ensure that your backup files were successfully uploaded.
