Upload Website contents via FTP

FTP is known as the most secure file transfer method for transferring files to your computer to the server using the internet.

What you need to know about FTP:
– Allows transfer of multiple files and directories.
– Upload/Download resume if internet connection is lost.
– You can hold items in the queue during the upload or download process.
– You can schedule transfers.
– Ability to upload large files.

File Structure and Directory

Home Directory: [home/cPanel_userName/] This is where all user configuration files, Maildir, logs, and site folders are located. Do not remove or delete any files from here, and avoid uploading content to this directory.

Website’s Directory: [public_html] is your website’s root directory. This directory contains all website contents that are viewable online or publicly. Other hosting providers use the domain’s folder directory, this works the same way.

Use any FTP account as follows:
1. Special FTP Accounts (System default FTP account) or
2. FTP Account (Created by customer)

To start:

1. FTP connection using Special FTP Accounts (System default FTP account).

1.1 At cPanel go to >> Files >> FTP Accounts.

1.2 Under Special FTP Accounts >> actions, click Configure FTP Client to get the FTP credentials, copy and save (Password will be your cPanel login password).

1.3 Open any FTP client of your choice to connect to the server.

In this tutorial we will use FileZilla as the FTP Client.

Enter your FTP credentials and click Quickconnect.

1.4 Click OK to confirm the SSL Certificate to continue.

1.5 In the FTP client dashboard, you can see a Successful message status when you are connected to the server.

The left pane side Local site is the home computer where files are saved, while the right pane Remote site is your Web hosting server.

1.6 Uploading Files: From the Local site left area, search the file you wish to upload in the server. Search the file or folder you’d like to upload, highlight then right-click on the highlighted file or folder then >> Click Upload to transfer the file to the server.

1.7 On the right side area Remote site. Confirm and make sure that the file is uploaded at (public_html) directory. Check that your website contents are completely uploaded.

1.8 Downloading files: On the right side area Remote site, highlight and right click any file or folder you like to ‘Download’. Your entire website contents are saved at the public_html directory. You can download the whole directory to get a back-up copy of your entire website.

2. FTP connection using FTP Account (Created by customer).

2.1 Create your FTP account at cPanel >> Files >> FTP Accounts.

2.2 Fill Out the field with your FTP Account, make sure to take a Memo of the username and password to avoid FTP connection failure.

Log In field is FTP Username.
Domain, select the correct domain from the dropdown.
– Enter Your Password and Retype to validate. You may click the Password Generator the system will give you a random password.
Directory, you may leave as it is or enter public_html the website directory.
– Click Create FTP Account to add the new account.

2.3 If you have lost your FTP account credentials you may click the Configure FTP Client to locate the Host Server and username. Then reset the FTP password Change Password.

– 1.3 Open any FTP client of your choice to connect to the server.

Note: File upload speeds may vary based on several factors. For example, internet connection speed can significantly affect upload times; higher speeds result in faster uploads. Additionally, larger file sizes typically take longer to upload. Please always ensure that the upload is successful before disconnecting from the FTP client.
